Medea, Jason and the Argonauts live relatively happy lives. After years of fleeing, they are admitted as strangers into Corinth, Greece. With the birth of two daughters, they build a new life, but when King Creon dies and the throne is left unmanned, the security of the family is once again jeopardized. Medea's unconditional love is devastated when Jason decides to start a new life in the royal family.
“You will have to live the rest of your time on the throne knowing that you have left your own wife and children. You're like a statue Jason. Your insides are petrified, my prince is gone.”
Melissa Knollenburg wrote a new drama text especially for Jori Hermsen Productions, based on the Greek myth of the same name. The stories of the children, the royal family and the friends of Jason and Medea also get a voice in this adaptation.
Composer Jorrit van den Ham wrote on the basis of five poems a unique composition for six singers. They deepen and reflect the inner world of Medea.
Directed by Jori Hermsen, Medea is a musical location performance about the search for the meaning of existence. That we are alive does not mean that we are actually aware of our right to exist. What if your rights are determined by your gender and origin? In Medea, all the characters search for their place in life, sometimes leading to a more honorable existence in death.
